This review is from: Bayer K9 Advantix II Blue 6-Month Flea and Tick Drops for Extra Large Dogs, 55 to Pound (Misc.) I have been using Advantix for 14 years now and have found nothing better. Have compared it to cheaper store brands and to Frontline, but the Advantix works best. My outside dogs are not bothered by fleas, ticks or even flies. I have read some poor reviews on this product, but neither of my dogs have ever experienced any side effects to Advantix, even when they were young. It seems that when I used Frontline in the past, the directions said to put the entire contents of the tube in one spot between the shoulder blades, whereas Advantix specifically states to disperse in four areas from the shoulders to the base of the tail. I wonder if some people are putting all of it in one spot and that is causing irritation? She will scratch herself up looking for relief from just a few. I use Advantix II and by the next day she is no longer scratching. I have used Frontline on her in the past and it never seemed to get rid of all the fleas. As advertized, this medicine lasts 30 days, so it is important you apply EVERY 30 days. I have noticed that if I apply a couple of days late she starts scratching again. However, I would recommend buying from Drs. Foster and Smith instead of Amazon. They're about $10 cheaper and offer free standard shipping on all flea and tick products. I bought Advantage for both cats under 9 lbs and dogs under 10 lbs for my parents. They have 3 cats and 2 dogs that became subject to a plague of fleas during the 2 weeks I was visiting. I've used Frontline for my 2 dogs in the past and was very happy with it, but for 5 animals Frontline is a big expense. Advantage is a little less expensive. I researched the differences between the two and basically it comes down to Frontline will also handle ticks whereas Advantage is just for fleas. People seemed happy with both products. Biospot is cheaper than both but totally useless. I was a little anxious about using Advantage without knowing if it worked as well as Frontline. We put it on all the animals the afternoon the package arrived. That night one of the cats was sitting on me. I got up to go to the store and noticed two fleas on me. Later she was on me again and when I got up there were 8! She moved to my father's lap and when he got up he had 17 on... My chorkie (teacup yorkie/chiuaua) Maggie was constantly chewing on herself. In Riverside the flea population is ridiculous! flea shampoos have never worked and my poor baby was chewing herself to death. She lost most of the fur on her bum and had flea allergy dermatitis. After I applied the Advantage she stopped itching immediately!!!!! Its been a month and we're going to give her a second application some time this week but her skin and coat are much better. She's even EATING BETTER!!! three big meals a day! She gained weight and is now a healthy 4 pounds. Thank You ADVANTAGE!!! you're a life saver! NOT ONE FLEA IN A MONTH! What else can I say beside IT WORKS! Bought the 4 month supply, but only use 2 of them, keeping the other 2 just in case. What a difference after only 2 dose of this stuff, we were able to catch the disoriented fleas with our fingers and squash them with a hammer =). Our west highland terrier is much happier now! No more fleas visible on our dog 2 weeks after the 2nd dose, so we stop using them. It has been over 5 months now and we haven't seen any of them return. We use different doses to cover the whole herd. We used Advantage when we lived in TX & it worked great. Then we moved to MO, got a new vet who sold Frontline in bulk & gave one free when you bought four. He would just fill syringes with a prescribed amout & put those in a medicine bottle. We thought, sure, whats the difference & went on as usual. The frontline is a good product & we couldnt really tell any difference so we just didnt think anymore about it. But after a few months one of our dogs started to have allergic reactions to fleas. For reasons I wont go into here, we switched Vets. Our new Vet didnt sell Frontline in bulk so we purchased the Advantage from her that came directly from the maker, Bayer. Wow, what a difference! In the "old days" before Advantage and Frontline became available it was the tiresome routine of wash the dogs, spray the house and lawn with noxious chemicals and repeat. It often took an entire Saturday. These drops were a blessing. Now the Advantage seems to be losing it's effectiveness. My vet agrees, saying they need to tweek their formula. I've started using Frontline one month, then Advantage the next month. It's the only way to keep fleas away.
